Good meeting yesterday. Lots to do, lots to do...
One more time... --Rob

I'm not proposing the image below as the logo, because I suck at creating from scratch in Photoshop, but as a very basic concept, what do you think? I think the call number should probably be larger, and perhaps should say Radio...

K-FLiP (small "i"...) 100.1 FM

There will be a radio station and radio lounge at Flipside this year. The station will feature the opportunity for DJs and potential NPR news commentators to entertain Flipziens with music and commentary. Sign-up at our DJ SIGNUPS page!
This year the Tower will be lit and have blinking lights!!! Of course this may camoflauge the radio station and no one will notice it.....
I've been google searching for cheap radios. I've been sticking to hand-held, portable radios.
These are MP3 style, with a wrist strap and includes ear buds. They run on "two button cell batteries (included)".
$2 (75 minimum) No information on shipping costs. Black, Pink or White
$2.30 (25 minimum) $2.95 shipping cost (not sure if that's per case (of 25) or per order) White's cheapest. Also availabe in pink for $2.60 each (min. 25)
$1.79 (50 minumum) If we want them to have our logo or some text on it, $45 set-up charge. Includes flashlight, multiple colors.
These are hand-cranked radios. 1 minute of cranking = 20 min of music.
Jim was posting to Crag's list and Austin Freecycling.
Laser Cut-Outs
The folks that got us these last year haven't signed up for the camp. I've asked if they are coming (and maybe just don't know of the the wiki). If we have a source to get them there might be funds available. (Jim and Matt volunteered.)
Stickers
Has someone designed these? Do they need to be printed? What is the priority on these? (Stickers, say a roll of 500 would be useful in getting the word out...)
Words, words, words
Doesn't look like we will be in Survival Guide this year. We have an article ready for submission to the Flipside Flame. Suggest improvements:
Flipside Radio: Turn On, Tune In!
The Odd Ones are returning with their mighty 40-foot bamboo tower and awe-inspiring
40-watt transmitter, filling the Pyropolis airwaves with all the music, interviews,
news, and announcements that you need! KFLIP will be broadcasting in glorious
monophonic sound at a frequency of 100.1 MHz on your FM dial, so bring your radios.
And just like last year, we're opening up our programming grid to everyone. Come by
the radio station and sign up for some one-hour slots! Share your musical tastes or
mad interview skillz with the whole community. We'll also be setting up a Wiki page
where you can reserve slots in advance; more details on that soon.

I spoke with M7 at town hall about our camp location. He now knows that we want some altitude and that we want to be closely affiliated with the Rangers. Silona, you should expect a call from him, or contact him yourself if he doesn't. M7 is responsible for city planning this year, so he IS the go-to guy on this issue. He is also aware, as is Sodium, that we are planning on donating radios to the theme camps (btw, I can contribute some money to this as well if needed).
Jim says:
We will have a tech rehearsal, including tower erection, at our Hyde Park house on Saturday, MAY 3rd @ 4pm, 620 Fairfield Lane 454-4404 pizza & drinks!
What is the plan for setting up the tower? There was a call for folks showing up Wednesday (a day before everyone else) to set up the tower. Thing is we need 5-8 people to set the tower up. If we can't get that many of our folk there on Wednesday, we might want to wait until Thursday where there will be (awesome) free labor just milling about.
We also need a Tower inventory. What needs to be trucked out? What can be transported by car?
Need to know how many people are necessary and how much time set-up will take. Also a Lounge inventory would be good so we can handle transportation.
Do we hand out to camps? Do we hand out to individuals? Do we get some Odd Ones to volunteer at the greeter station?
As an homage to the Sound Restrictions, I was thinking we could have a Silent Dance Party. We'd need a DJ, dance floor, and a bunch of people with FM radios with headphones/ear buds. This could be centered at the Lounge, but anywhere there isn't sound (within a mile, baby!!) would be part of the dance party. Can we get this as an official event?
I mucked around in GarageBand for a little while and threw together some station ID MP3s. I can make more very easily. -- Tall Matt
[ Editorial Note: pbwiki's lack of support for URLs with spaces in them was reported almost a year ago. No fix yet. I renamed my MP3s so they don't have spaces in them and now the links work, but I'm not impressed. -- Matt ]
* Straightforward ID with psychedelic rock in the background
* Enthusiastic ID with Steve Earle's "The Revolution Starts Now" behind it
* Strange ID with unusual vintage electronica in the background
Tower Farm is important! Why the Radio Rangers have put their tower
at the BOTTOM of the camp is weird!
I will add lights to the tower configuration, plus Edwin says he can pre-fab a
better "collar" for combining the two 22' sections of bamboo. But once the tower
was up last year, there were no probs! Remember coax cable is 100', tower 40',
so station can only be 60' away.

Notes from the 23-Feb meeting:
We propose setting up a tower Farm for all antennae - rangers, KFLiP radio, HAM antennae, whatever else.
Can we get a Ranger radio for the radio station? Or a Ranger presence?
Our station should be attended by one of our camp members any time it is broadcasting. Are we going to set core radio hours? There will be a sign-up sheet for times.
We will offer 5 minutes at the top of every hour for Ranger announcements and any other important information.
We're going to buy a bunch of cheap radios, put KFLiP stickers on them, and distribute them to all the theme camps. Sophia and Jim will take this on.
We will draft a formal letter to LLC introducing Jim E. and explaining his radio experience. We propose that the radio station be considered infrastructure rather than a camp-specific thing so we can promote it. Emphasize potential tie-in with Ranger radio station.
Will it be possible to WiFi "in" and/or "out" of Camp this year? jim
* We talked about either handing out cheap radios to each camp or providing stickers and/or pamphlets to the Greeters to give to new arrivals telling them where we live on the FM dial.
* We talked about collaborating with Smash Camp to help form an infrastructure super-camp of some kind -- recycling, internet, radio, power...
* Instead of the broadcast setup we had this year, maybe we could broadcast from a Radio Lounge? A place with comfy chairs/pillows, a good sound system pulling audio off the back of the station's mixing board, and a big electronic sign of some kind that displays info on what's currently being broadcast. Maybe we could automatically pull the MP3 track info out of iTunes and put it on the sign. Maybe even off an iPod? And also be able to manually set the text for things like simulcasts and interviews. -- Tall Matt
[Yeah, we need to make one of these: http://infernoptix.com/ Anybody got an extra few hundred little valves? -- Edwin!]
Hey Campers! But of course! We shall do the 40 watts at 40 feet thing again! But we def, def, definitely need to get folks to make "radio" a part of the FlipSide culture. It currently is not. We need to encourage folks to bring a radio, one that will sit on the bar, in the port-a-john, at the campsites, that will, generally stay tuned to the station. While we seemed to be welcomed as a cool new thing last year; very, very few people actually listened to the station at their camps, or bars, or construction sites. We need to put the word out, in advance, that a radio is another thing you should bring to camp.
I like the idea of a Radio Lounge, and related ideas of Tall Matt. But remember, the real value of "radio," as I stand on my soapbox here, is it's invisible power to be everywhere at once.
I know that Beth spoke with the Flipside Flame Lady (don't remember name), so Beth will be doing some editing for them and be able to write an article about our radio station.
The person in charge of the Medical Rangers is Kathleen (must verify), so Jim's friend Karen Horan, EMT, will need to talk with Kathleen eventually.
